When our friend Heidi was tiny (we're talking 20 years ago) she had a toy vacuum cleaner that I was jealous of, because it was a Dyson and back then I couldn't afford a Dyson. It had little coloured balls that went round in the cyclone to represent the dust and dirt.

There's even one in the V&A collection of toys! 

Well nowadays Caslon, who specialise in reproductions of household items, have got an incredible range, some of which I'd never have dreamt of.


A Dyson hairdryer toy that really blows air! 


A toy washing machine from Zara with accessories, a soap drawer, and a handle on the back to make it turn round!


A John Lewis coffee machine, that is part of a whole range of matching kitchen accessories!

Back in the 1960s I was given a potentially lethal toy cooker which used the same sort of heating blocks as camping stoves and Mamod steam engines. It would cook raw sausages to peak stomach bug temp, if you hadn't already set fire to your bedroom.

I remember having a toy iron complete with a plastic wire, ending with a small circular sucker pad to "plug" it into (onto) the wall. I even had an ironing board. It worked in that I actually quite like ironing!

Hello! We've sort of lost count, but think the first Advent Calendar was back in 2003, the Internet Archive Wayback Machine says it looked like this: Of course all the links are dead, but the thing it has in common with this year's is that it is still coded in HTML, probably the last thing I will ever rely on coding for. Now it looks like this: Happy Advent! We have gone for the Bonne Maman JAM Calendar again this year, after leaving it too late last year and it selling out at both Fenwick and Selfridges! We get a fresh pot of jam every day to enjoy with our tartines and Ovomaltines. We also have the Domino's "Merry Crustmas" leaflet, and a MUJI calendar we'll show you later in the month.
