Hannover Travel Guide 2019

Travel

Hannover is in central Northern Germany, and is easily accessible from anywhere in Germany by train. The Hauptbahnhof is central, adjacent to the main shopping district.

On the east side of the station, Budget is really basic, but for a night or two is a very cheap solution, especially if you are splashing out on a nicer hotel elsewhere in your holiday! Around £40, and you can choose to include breakfast.

Visitor Card:

There is a Hannover Card if you want to do use lots of public transport or are staying for a fe days, but it's very easy to get around on foot.

A vast Greek restaurant that opens at 6pm and is full by 6.15pm, so book ahead or get there early
About 10 minutes walk north-east of the station
As well as mains, it has a Greek salad bar, great drinks and desserts

Top tip:
Berlin has Ritter Sport, Köln has Haribo ... but Hannover has Bahlsen, the makers of Choco Leibniz!
Upstairs at the Markthalle on Karmarschstrasse, there is an outlet store full of chocolate, biscuits, souvenirs, everything you could witsh for. Bring an extra suitcase for some bargains!

Design shops:

Sightseeing:

Hannover has several city centre churches with impressive towers and interiors.
The Marktkirche dates from the 12th century, and nearby are the Neustadter Hof and Stadtkirche St Johannis, the Kreuzkirche, and the ruins of the Aegidienkirche (left as a memorial to victims of violence and war).
It has an unusual tower, each side has a different symbol: the hexagram (6 pointed star), the pentagram (5 points), the Radkreuz (4), Gabelkreuz (3) and the traditional cross (Passionkreuz).

Sprengel Museum
At the North end of the Machsee lake is the Sprengel Museum, on Kurt Schwitters Platz.

It has a permanent collection, and temporary exhibitions of 20th and 21st century art. Highlights include extensive collections of Niki de Saint Phalle, Kurt Schwitters, and a recreation of an Abstract Room by El Lissitzky.

Leibnizhaus, Holzmarkt 5

Built in 1499, the mathematician and philosopher Leibniz lived here around 1700. It has a small exhibition and serves a a conference centre and hotel.
