Lyon Travel Guide 2020

Travel:

Eurostar/Thalys from St Pancras, changing at Lille or Paris
Standard Premier often available, with meal and drinks included
It's easier to change at Lille, allow 15 minutes for this
Paris requires travelling across the city on the RER - see Seat 61 for details
https://www.seat61.com/Paris-metro.htm#Metro%20routes%20from

Hotels:

Ibis Budget/Styles, Rue de la Villette

https://all.accor.com/hotel/7373/index.en.shtml
On the east side of the station, next door to each other. Styles is more expensive but includes breakfast. Budget is really basic, but for a night or two is a very cheap solution, especially if you are splashing out on a nicer hotel later in the holiday!

Marriott Cité International, Quai Charles De Gaulle
Overlooking the River Rhone, a short tram ride away from the city centre
Tram or bus to Cite Internationale, take the stop after Interpol, also for Modern Art Museum
Executive lounge, rooftop fitness centre and Jacuzzi
Clean and modern, good breakfast and refreshments

Radisson Blu, Part-Dieu Tower

The top 10 floors of this landmark are taken up by hotel rooms with magnificent views.

Food:

A La Traboule, 3 Place du Gouvernement
https://www.restaurant-alatraboule.com/english-website/index.html Traditional bouchon Lyonnais
There are many like this, look out for the checked tablecloths
It has a low rating online, and you may be able to make a better choice of bouchon than us! But we liked the hospitality, the food, and the shelter from the rain.

Le Coquemar, 25 Montée Cardinal Decourtray
https://www.facebook.com/lecoquemar69005/
A small family-run restaurant, right at the top of the hill behind the basilica. Its lunch menu is just usually 3 mains and a dessert, but they do amazing food and you don't need more than that.
NOT MONDAY. ONLY OPEN 12 NOON to 1.30PM.

Akle, 108 Rue Chaponnay
https://akle.fr/
A Lebanese restaurant, very small so book ahead if you can, from a couple who also run a brilliant food truck. Close to the station and Place Guichard.

Food Hall: Halles de Lyon Pau Bocuse (11am-3pm), 102 cours Lafayette
https://www.halles-de-lyon-paulbocuse.com/les-halles/

Take the funicular from Saint-Jean to Théatres Romains
School groups dress in togas which is embarrassing for them!

Croix Rousse
This is a district north of the city, the main street is Boulevard de Croix-Rousse.
We would recommend a tour by road-train which includes the trompe l'oeil murals on the sides of buildings. It runs from 17 rue Paul Chenavard near the Muesum of Fine Arts. There's a discount with the Lyon City Card. We got out at Metro Henon at the top end of the route and walked back to the city, so as to spend more time at different sights.

Maison des Canuts, 10 rue d’Ivry
past and present weaving techniques

Soierie Vivante, 21 rue Richan and 11 rue Lebrun

Check times on their website:
https://www.soierie-vivante.asso.fr/ENG/Adultes_visites_individuels.php

The traboules are passageways between streets, and some of them are architecturally fascinating, with vast courtyards. One of the best is Cour des Voraces: 9 place Colbert to 29 rue Imbert Colomes
